Ulster Canoe Festival 2017
Canoeists from all over the UK and Ireland (and France) flocked to this years Ulster Canoe Festival.
Gareth and John yet again pulled out all the stops to produce another memorable canoeing weekend. This years event was held at Portneal Lodge on the banks of the Lower Bann. There was a great variety of sessions aimed at all levels and interests.
CCKA members were there in strength and were there early on Friday to set up CCKA headquarters. Friday night was an informal gathering to meet up with other paddlers and of course have a few beers and try out the latest camp fire contraption.
The weather did not deter the campers on Saturday morning as everyone was up bright and early ready for the days activities. There were various sessions to choose from including Rescues, Freestyle, Journey Skills, White Water Skills, Bushcraft, Camp Cooking, Tandem Skills. There were also all day sessions including a sea trip and an all day river trip.
The evening events included burgers, a excellent inspiring talk from Colin Skeath who had recently completed a ‘Round Britain Canoe’ trip with his nephew. This was followed by some prize giving and awards. CCKA members then retreated to HQ to continue the night with the mandatory wine and cheese board.
Sunday morning came fast and again, most were up ready for the next round of sessions. Similar to Saturdays. There was some great opportunities on both days to receive coaching from some of the best coaches in the country. Dave Rossetter and Jules Burnard to name a few.
Next years event is planned to take place 31 Aug – 2 Sep 2018 and is not to be missed. It will run from the Share Centre in Lisnaskea utilising Lough Erne and the surrounding rivers.
