Portmoon Bothy

The Portmoon Bothy provides a unique overnight experience for visitors in a remote and breathtaking part of the world famous Causeway Coast. The bothy can comfortably accommodate up to 8 people and there is also a small area immediately adjacent to the building suitable for pitching a tent.  Inside the bothy there is a large kitchen-living area with wood burning stove, seating, a table and plenty of pegs for hanging wet gear to dry.  The bedroom has one large sleeping platform. Bed linen and mattresses are not provided.  The composting toilet has now been replaced with a portable toilet.

The bothy has no mains water or electricity.  A small stream flows through the site however this is shared with grazing sheep and it is therefore not recommended to use the water.  There is NO drinking water available in the bothy, Users are advised to carry sufficient drinking water for their stay. There is cutlery, plates and mugs for six people, although you must supply your own cooking equipment including stove, utensils, etc., along with any firewood needed.

To avoid disappointment, all users are advised to bring everything they might need for their stay including toilet paper, biodegradable washing up liquid, cooking pots, matches, candles, etc.  Past users may donate such items on departure however their presence cannot be guaranteed.  Any additional donations are gratefully received however we would ask visitors not to leave any food including tinned food. Water and fire wood must be brought by the group booking the bothy as it will no longer be supplied.

There are some additional guidelines for using the stove and toilet within the building – please familiarise yourself with these on arrival i.e. the fuel basket should be left filled with the stove cleaned out ready for use by the next visitors.   We encourage all visitors to comply with the ethics of Leave No Trace, taking particular care to minimise the effects of fires and remove all litter on departure.

Log Book Report: Each group leader should file a report on the condition of the Bothy at the end of their visit detailing how it was left by the previous group . On departure the log book is to be completed and all kit taken in is removed.

Access to the Bothy: The bothy is located on the coastline between the Giant’s Causeway and Dunseverick Castle at GR C979 452 with access by sea only. The closest public access point on the North Coast Sea Kayak Trail is at Dunseverick Harbour at GR C000 445.  This is an exposed section of coastline suitable for experienced kayakers or those paddling under the guidance of a suitably qualified instructor/guide.
